Uber Accidents

In recent years, the rideshare industry has grown tremendously, with drivers and passengers connecting online using Uber and other popular technology platforms. As an Uber driver or passenger, it can be wonderful to take advantage of the convenience and affordability or value of each ride. However, you must also understand the risks involved if an accident occurs during your Uber ride.

Who is covered by Uber’s insurance policy?

Uber’s insurance coverage for a driver is most extensive when a passenger is in the car. For the duration of an Uber ride, Uber protects both the driver and passenger(s) with a $1 million liability policy, as well as a $1 million uninsured/underinsured motorist policy. Pedestrians and drivers or passengers of other vehicles involved in the accident are covered as well, but only if the Uber driver has a passenger.

If an Uber driver does not have a passenger in the car, or if the driver is not on the way to pick up a confirmed passenger, the driver is not covered by Uber’s insurance policy, nor is anyone else who might have been involved in the accident.

What if an accident occurs during an Uber ride?

If you are involved in an accident while driving in an Uber, whether you are the driver or passenger, follow the steps you would normally take immediately after a car accident.

  • Ensure everyone’s safety. If you or anyone else involved in the accident was injured, immediately summon medical help.
  • Call the police. The police officer will create an official report of the accident, including important details that will be useful for insurance claims or any necessary investigations.
  • Collect information from everyone involved, including witnesses. Do your best to document the names and contact information of other drivers and witnesses.
  • Document the accident. If possible, take photos of the accident scene, including the Uber vehicle, other vehicles that were involved, and any related injuries.
  • Seek non-emergency medical attention as soon as possible. Some of your injuries may not be visible. Consult with a physician within 24 hours of the accident to be sure your medical needs are addressed.
  • Contact a personal injury lawyer. For your own protection, contact a lawyer as soon as possible.

Why do I need a personal injury lawyer?

Although Uber has you covered pretty well with their insurance policy, you will likely face the typical hurdles that insurance providers create to limit the compensation you receive. Also, your injuries might surpass the $1 million limit of the insurance policy. Regardless, your personal injury lawyer will protect your best interests.
